Tonight is the night! The stunning light show, The Bay Lights, is returning to the San Francisco Bay Bridge and this time it will be permanent. This immensely popular light display first started a couple of years ago and has recently taken a hiatus. Now it will be back – better than ever for all to enjoy. There will be a beautiful fireworks display to celebrate the relighting of The Bay Lights and the opening of Super Bowl City and a concert by Chris Isaak on The City Stage. What a fun event! We are excited! If you are in the area. try to enjoy it. If not, the relighting will no doubt be on the internet. www.powerhiking.com

The Super Bowl is in San Francisco. The fans are arriving. The setting is ready. The teams are set. If the weather cooperates, it will be a great week. Visit The Presidio; visit Alcatraz; visit Fort Point; visit Golden Gate Park and the de Young Museum or the California Academy of Sciences; take a ferry boat ride across the Bay to Tiburon or to Angel Island; take a Bay cruise. Whatever you do, enjoy the City. A book that might be some help with fun ideas, suggestions and directions is PowerHiking San Francisco Twelve Great Walks Through The Streets of San Francisco and Environs. Look for it. Home to monster off shore waves and world class surfing contests, there is a draw to visit Mavericks for surfers as well as beach wanderers. The world’s best surfers come at a moment’s notice to surf Mavericks when the waves are right, but today it is enjoyed only by a flock of pelicans. www.powerhiking.com

With the sun rising behind Angel Island and the majestic Golden Gate Bridge glowing in the morning sunlight, it is winter in San Francisco. There is rain. There is fog. There is wind and cold to come. But today is a day of warmth and sun and beauty and a day to be enjoyed. Birds are flying in the sky. Geese and ducks fly in formation. Pelicans skim the water looking for food. Listen to the seals barking as they frolic among the birds. Winter, yes, but a beautiful sunny day.

The herring are running in San Francisco Bay and the birds are following. Flocks of pelicans, geese, sea gulls and ducks – white billed black ducks, white faced black ducks, ducks with white wings and mallards – are swarming the water. What a sight to see their frenzied activity and then to watch them skim the water in great numbers and beautiful formations. As the herring move, the birds follow and soon they are gone.

Whimsical, fun and family friendly, The GREY WOLF LODGE in Kansas City, Kansas is a great family treat. Bears, deer and wolf abound and a bear bench greats you at the entrance. Each visitor is presented with wolf ears to wear and all the clientele wander the hotel admiring the huge bears, deer, elk and moose wearing the wolf ears. There is an enormous outdoor swimming pool, a whimsically bear oriented miniature golf course, a larger than life video game room and, the highlight, indoor water slides. The water slides operate year round and it is great fun to watch adults as well as children splash through the bears, wolves and animals. A small baby pool watches over the water slides. It is truly a fun filled paradise! There are chests, photographs, statues and all manor of magical items throughout the Lodge corridors, all rendered to life and speech by the magical wand in a child’s hand. Food is good and abundant and the staff delightful. If you are in the Kansas City, Kansas vicinity, the Grey Wolf Lodge is a must visit!
