Run For Chocolate??

February 10, 2017

Run For The Chocolate is the Bissinger Chocolate Company annual fun run.  It is a run/walk event where you get chocolates during and after the run.  The runners/walkers go through the streets of historic St. Louis, starting at the chocolate factory through historic St. Louis and returning along a path that runs along the Mississippi River.  Chocolate goody bags, hot cocoa and chocolate medals await at the finish line.  It takes place Saturday, February 11.  Sounds like a lot of fun and a lot of yummy eating.  Burn those calories!

SEMIAHMOO

August 13, 2016

Semiahmoo.  What an unusual name.  Not in the Northwest!  About two hours north of Seattle and a half an hour south of Vancouver is Semiahmoo.  Nestled on a peninsula between Semiahmoo Bay on the Samish Sea to the west and Drayton Bay on the east, Semiahmoo is tranquil, quiet and beautiful. The water is cold and the beach is a restful place to walk or read or just meditate and admire the beauty. There is golf, swimming, tennis, trails for hiking and walking – just about whatever activity you want.  Walk next to the water along the Coast Millennium Trail, with views of both bays. And there is fishing! With views galore, siting on one of the large sea logs on the beaches is the perfect spot.  Too chilly?  Sit by the roaring fire or roast s’mores in the outdoor fire pit.  This area was originally inhabited by the Semiahmoo Indians.  It was visited by the Spanish and British explorers and the United States Navy in the early 1800s, but it was not until the Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858 that settlers came to the area. In 1870 the nearby town of Blaine was founded and became known for its canneries.  The word semiahmoo means half moon or water all around and that is exactly what Semiahmoo looks like.     http://www.powerhiking.comIMG_9735IMG_9710IMG_9717IMG_9688

LOVING RIO!

August 9, 2016

Like groupies we are glued to the TV set each night watching the 2016 Olympics and the beautiful panoramas of Rio.  What a glorious city!  Yes, it has its problems, but the scenery is beyond fabulous.  Loved the 2016 Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony as well.  What a visual treat!  Smiles, laughter, dancing, singing interspersed with lights and sound and music!  It was honest, earnest and fun!  From the history to the color to the music and the fireworks – it was fun!  Maracana Stadium and the sites and scenes of the beautiful landscape left us thrilled.  And what about Ipanema!!!!  Amazing!  The games have begun.  Let the party begin as well.                                                                                               http://www.powerhiking.com

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HIKE

June 27, 2016

Trees, water, blue sky and sunshine – what could be better than a day at Bon Tempe Lake! Bon Tempe Lake is a favorite of hikers, runners and joggers in Marin County and it is easy to understand why.  The scenery is spectacular.  Part of the Marin County watershed, it is a wonderful place to hike as the trail is wide, easy to follow and not steep.  The lake is stocked with bass and trout so you will probably see a fisherman or two about as you hike around it’s spectacularly scenic perimeter.  Bon Tempe Lake is a great outing for families as there are picnic tables and bbqs as well.  Plan to visit it soon!                                        www.powerhiking.comBON TEMPE

MORE NEW IN MANHATTAN

April 26, 2016

There is a Starbucks in just about every block in Manhattan.  But now there will be the largest Starbucks in Manhattan.  Opening in the near future in the hot Meatpacking District, the new Starbucks will be the biggest ever in New York City.  Located at 61 Ninth next to the ever so popular and crowded Chelsea Market, there will be a Roastery and a Tasting Room.  Just down the street from the San Francisco Bay Area’s Blue Bottle, the Seattle Starbucks will be Manhattans biggest ever coffee shop and special in every way.  Looking forward to a visit!                                                                   http://www.powerhiking.com

NEW IN NEW YORK CITY

April 22, 2016

We are excited about TurnStyle at the Columbus Circle Subway Station.  It is new, hot and a great place for shops and food stores. Grab lunch, a quick bite, cookies, a donut or wine – you name it and the subway station has it.  Columbus Circle is one of the busiest subway stations in the city – and our favorite for going uptown or downtown – so this venue should be a great success.  A take off on the food halls of Grand Central Station where you can find just about anything to eat or take out, we are hoping New Yorkers will like it.  And the vendors are all locally owned so, by supporting the venue, you are supporting New York’s own entrepreneurs! Visit it at turn-style.com or, better yet, follow us into the subway station.                                                                                      www.powerhiking.com

STUNNING LIGHTS RETURN TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE

January 30, 2016

Tonight is the night! The stunning light show, The Bay Lights, is returning to the San Francisco Bay Bridge and this time it will be permanent. This immensely popular light display first started a couple of years ago and has recently taken a hiatus. Now it will be back – better than ever for all to enjoy. There will be a beautiful fireworks display to celebrate the relighting of The Bay Lights and the opening of Super Bowl City and a concert by Chris Isaak on The City Stage. What a fun event! We are excited! If you are in the area. try to enjoy it. If not, the relighting will no doubt be on the internet.                  www.powerhiking.com

SUPER BOWL FANS

January 30, 2016

The Super Bowl is in San Francisco. The fans are arriving. The setting is ready. The teams are set. If the weather cooperates, it will be a great week. Visit The Presidio; visit Alcatraz; visit Fort Point; visit Golden Gate Park and the de Young Museum or the California Academy of Sciences; take a ferry boat ride across the Bay to Tiburon or to Angel Island; take a Bay cruise. Whatever you do, enjoy the City. A book that might be some help with fun ideas, suggestions and directions is PowerHiking San Francisco Twelve Great Walks Through The Streets of San Francisco and Environs. Look for it.  You might like it.                                                                      www.powerhiking.comIMG_6203PHSF 2012 jpg
