FESTIVAL OF THE WHALES

March 7, 2017

The 46th Dana Point Festival of the Whales got underway last weekend and lasts through March 12th.  It is a celebration of the the migration of the gray whale from feeding grounds in the Bering Sea of Alaska to the birthing grounds in warm waters off Baja California.  Undertaking this 5000 mile journey yearly, the whales pass the picturesque California beach town of Dana Point.  Located just south of Laguna Beach, Dana Point has been host to this entertaining and educational event for 46 years.  First and foremost for a visit is a not to be missed whale watching adventure to observe the majestic creatures up close – an adventure for which you need an advance reservation.  Other than whale watching there are many activities to entice and entertain the entire family.  There are art lessons, art shows and sales, sand sculpting, fishing, music, the Mobile Marine Mammal Museum, car displays, a town center walking tour and food.  It is a wonderful way to spend the day in a most picturesque spot by a beautiful California beach.  What could be better??  Many people descend on Dana Point each year for the festival so be prepared for crowds.  But the adventure and the opportunity to observe such magnificent creatures in their habitat on a yearly journey is definitely an experience not to be missed!  Check out the website for more information.                                                                                          www.powerhiking.com

HOT IN AUSTIN!

May 21, 2016

The hottest spot in Austin and the coolest place to visit is the South Congress Hotel.  New and chic it is not just a hotel but the center of “the” place to be!  It is modern with top restaurants like Otoko, Cafe No Se and Central Standard and brings in the locals as well as visitors.  Sharp shops and an outdoor bar, there is also an open courtyard, home to free concerts.  It is located on South Congress Avenue, where pedestrians wander day and night and options for dining range from yummy Italian to the best burgers in town to a lemonade stand.  South Congress Avenue is user friendly and has something for everyone – great fun but low-key and unspoiled.  Worth a visit!                                www.powerhiking.comSouth Congress AVenue

HOLIDAYS IN SAN ANTONIO

November 21, 2015

The holidays are coming and San Antonio is ready.  The most fun event is at the River Walk downtown.  The River Walk winds along the San Antonio River one block beneath the city.  Walk, ride a boat, shop or enjoy a riverside restaurant and watch the boats go by.  The Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony is an annual tradition in San Antonio and marks the beginning of the holiday season.  This year it will take place on November 27th from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm.  There is a parade of illuminated boats along the River Walk.  Filled with lights, decorated and carrying celebrities and bands and music, it is great fun for the entire family.  Tickets can be purchased online.

Another River Walk holiday event is Boat Caroling.  Every night at 8:15pm between December 2 and December 20, a different group glides along the River and sings carols and other popular songs.  The Fiesta de las Luminarias begins December 4th through December 20th.  Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening during that time period, luminarias are lit at dusk all along the banks of the River Walk.  It is truly festive and beautiful!  Have fun this holiday season in San Antonio!                                                         http://www.powerhiking.comChristmas in San Antonio
